Open-source software has become critical to the infrastructure of daily life. Despite this vaunted role, the "free" aspects of open source that make it easy to consume also make it hard to support well. To really address the ongoing challenges, especially around security, we need to collectively invest in a sustainable support model that includes funding from the many beneficiaries. This is not an easy path, but we collectively support all kind of critical infrastructure today, including electricity, roads, water and communications, all of which make use of software.
