Have you ever been traveling down a road, looking for a location where you have never been, trying to follow directions you find are unclear, and generally feeling that you lack proper instructions for where you are meant to go? Have you ever gone down a road for what seems like an eternity, only to discover that you should have turned left many kilometers ago?

Anyone who has been in these situations likely experienced considerable frustration. An uncomfortable sense of feeling lost, helpless, agitated, or even frightened. When we find ourselves in such a scenario, it can be an overwhelming and terrible experience!

It is somewhat surprising that many of these feelings often overwhelm us when performing testing or automated checks. The uncertainty of our craft can generate ample frustration as we explore software... and that sensation of feeling lost is more than we might like to admit. Especially when time is of the essence. However, we somehow work under the impression that this is a normal part of building software.

It doesn't have to be! The greatest explorers use a map. So what is the map for an exploring software tester?

Through proper tagging, naming, and error handling, you can create a roadmap and strategy that can help deliver you to your desired location. You can find what you are looking for, stay organized, and communicate your journey successfully to stakeholders so that they (and you) always know where you are on your journey.
