Capacity planning is an exercise undertaken by teams to plan how much work they can complete for a given sprint/iteration/timebox.

At scale, Programme Increment(PI) planning has a stronghold on our industry, however, this usually means mandating a single approach of normalised story points, limiting the freedom teams have in choosing their own way of working.

In this talk, Nick will share how he has led an organisation in adopting approach that allows them to do this at scale (over 100 tech teams), all in a way that is framework-agnostic and allows teams the freedom in their way of working.

He’ll share the practices and techniques to adopt, (free) tools they use, as well as the learning along the way.

Participant takeaways:

  • How to consistently size Epics/Features, whilst accounting for variation and being agnostic of a team’s way of working (Scrum, Kanban etc)

  • How to forecast delivery for longer-term horizons (e.g a quarter) whilst accounting for variation and risk

  • How to use these two bits of information to forecast your capacity (in terms of numbers of Epics/Features) for a given timebox

  • How to track the delivery progress of multiple Epics/Features whilst accounting for deadlines, uncertainty, and your total work in progress
