Practical Modern Enterprise Architecture: modernising architecture & ways of working at Saxo Bank
Level: General

Simon Rohrer takes you on a whistle-stop tour of all that we’ve achieved in the last 5 years at Saxo Bank combining multiple modern ways of working under a hands-on Modern Enterprise Architecture approach for sociotechnical transformation:

- Using cloud class technologies - Docker, Kubernetes, serverless, and more - as a lever to drive autonomy and alignment around a Team Topologies and BVSSH model

- Introducing event driven architectures and an operational and analytical Data Mesh on Kafka as a foundation for a data driven culture, an improvement in resilience, and a platform for Generative AI and machine learning

- Autonomation everywhere - implementing build and deployment pipelines in Azure DevOps inspired by Tapabrata Pal’s CapitalOne pipeline model and “Better Governance – Banking on Continuous Delivery” talk at DOES18 in London; automating Change Advisory Board and Change Requests; moving deliveries to production from once every two weeks to multiple times a day.

- Communication structures - using chat infrastructure like Microsoft Teams as an information radiator across the entire technology organisation

- Know Your Architecture - using ServiceNow, the Configuration Management Database and Common Service Data Model, and Spotify’s Backstage, as well as observability tools like Elastic and Grafana, as a foundation for governance, understanding, and automation

- Authoring regulator-required in house formal technology and ways-of-working policies and procedures and using them as a driver for modernisation

As a contributor to Jonathan Smart’s Sooner Safer Happier, and with over 30 years experience across Software Engineering, Enterprise Architecture and Ways of Working Transformation, Simon has brought all of his experience to bear on improving customer and colleague experience, increasing speed to market, and reducing cost and complexity in Saxo Bank - and learned much more from his colleagues and experiences along the way.
